Throughout the Old Section’s gravescape, countless gravestones stand in reverence to the burieds. In selected slate and marble memorials is the record of gravestone carvers whose work has a deserved place in our public appreciation and are a precious resource for scholars of all stripes. Medfield’s contribution to the story of folk-art culture in eastern Massachusetts can be seen in 377 gravestones attributed to 43 different carvers.
We are indebted to the scholarly research of two pre-eminent gravestone scholars, Laurel Gabel (shown far left)and Vincent Luti (near left). With profound thanks to them, we have a story to tell.
Located on this page is a small selection of gravestones and their carvers.
